I want a translucent color for the background of my tables ... any ideas on the best way to go about this? I think i have to use .png images..

you can try a 2px by 2px gif, where the pixels are opaque in the top right and bottom left corners nad transparent in hte others to give a checkerboard effect.

this can sometimes work to give a translucent effect depending on what its floating over and the font colors size etc - sometimes floating text over the top of this can make it unreadable.

Be aware that IE will often render your page very VERY slowly when you utilize the 2x2 gif or jpg trick, so be sure to test on that. It will depend upon the overall size of the area filled by the background.
