what is it called?

the little icon i see on most sites next to the URL and next to the title on the tabs. webmaster world has a little person with a star over its shoulder.

what is this called?

i'm sure it's been discussed here but i don't know what to search for.

It's called favicon.

If you want to use one, you need to:

1. create a 16x16 pixel image
2. save it as a .ico file and name it favicon.ico
3. upload it to the root folder of your domain

Browsers will look for this file when they come to your site.
