Quick Batch Conversion?

Looking for "best" way to batch change size/resolution

Greetings~
Frequently I need to perform some basic tasks like converting
20 jpg images that are 1600x1200 at 300
into
20 jpg images that are 800x600 at 72

My expertise is more in backend things rather than neat graphics, but I do have the Macromedia MX studio software. I think I also have version 6 of Photoshop.

Fireworks has a "batch conversion" feature, but it's rather cumbersome.

Is there a simpler/faster way via the above software or a utility to make multiple but simple conversions like this?

I know that if you look for the action tool bar in PhotoShop you can save yourself a "macro" which will duplicate any command sequence that you want to do. You can then go to file --> Automate --> Batch and select the action you created and apply it to all files in a folder. Sounds like this would work great for what you want to do.

I would recommend Irfanview, it is free you just need to download it from www.irfanview.com

It has a batch conversion option which is very flexible. It can do what you are wanting, that is resize a several images and change dpi value.

Yes (The basic command list in Fireworks is inadequate).

I found the best way to make the most from fireworks batch process feature is to create a command yourself for the type of batch you want (eg: file ext, scale, DPI, filter, etc) and then to use your command from the list when prompted. Very similar process to what was suggested by Monksp with PS.

Take a look in the FW help section for creating commands if you have not tried it.

Check out a program called Advanced Batch Converter....cheap and VERY good. I actually like it better than Photoshop's batch utility.

Wow - I very much appreciate the suggestions.
My problem with Fireworks is that it seems to insist on saving a .png file for each .jpg I want to convert. But any macro-type thing would be better than none and I'll have to explore it more.

I just downloaded and installed Irfanview but haven't tried it yet. It seems to "know" a lot of formats, so depending on the automation capabilities, it may be great.

I'll look for Advanced Batch Converter as well, as the name itself sounds exactly like what I need.
