Something similiar to Fireworks, does it exist?

I have grown tired of paying continually for upgrades and add-ons. The new versions will usually end up with 1 or 2 must-have new features and 50 i'll never use.

I was considering the new Studio mx 2004 update but found a really great free program to replace dreamweaver. It cuts the fat while keeping exactly what I am looking for, a good clean editor with built-in ftp.

I would love to find something similiar to replace fireworks.

What I don't need,

1) Something that helps me write the html
2) Help splicing images
3) Any special effects

What I would like,

1) Free, preferrably a open-source project.
2) The ability to export gifs and jpegs with all options
3) Anti-aliasing capabilities
4) A non dumbed-down program

It's a longshot, but if anybody knows of something I would love to hear about it.

yep, I think The GIMP is the exact thing you're looking for :
  • Open Source (GNU)
  • The option for exporting in almost all the image formats
  • A LOT of special effects/rendering effects
  • People consider it as the "free" version of Photoshop ;) (well , I do anyway)
  • VERY complicated to use - but once you get the hang of it, you're in :)
  • You can also install other plug-ins to suit your needs. (look over here [directory.google.com])

    Good luck!

    GIMP... beloved GIMP.

I've been running Linux off-and-on for (4?) years now, and straight for the past, what, 6? months. GIMP is my only real option, and I still haven't got the hang of it. Admittedly, I'm not a graphics person, but hey... Ah well.... After 1.2 it becomes more intuitive.

Must admit, I do most image work in photoshop (under wine).

Thanks all, I knew there had to be something out there.

Let me see, linux, apache, open office, mysql, php, html-kit, mozilla, phpbb and now the Gimp. I can't wait till the day I can say bye-bye to windows forever.
