What do you use to select in an image?

lasso, magnetic lasso, magic wand, pen tool, extraction filter?

I think most people use a magic wand to select a white or solod background and then easily choose select inverse. But when it comes to more difficult stuff, what do you use? I'm ok with all of them, but master of none.

combination of all but in photoshop i like zooming in and painting a mask in when it gets to the nitty gritty - its so much more flexible to be able to add and subtract from the selection at the pixel level.
