Are you designing on a Macintosh and then viewing from Windows? If so, the gamma difference means that Mac images will always be brighter than Windows images. You cannot correct for this in an ordinary GIF or JPG.

Do other colors on your system display correctly? If not, the problem is with the hardware-- the graphics card, monitor/display, or cable. Suspect this in particular if it is a sudden change, i.e. everything looked fine an hour ago but now everything's terrible.

If you are designig on a Mac see if you can locate adobe's gamma control panel.
It will allow you to set and save multiple gamma settings
or you can simply story multiple calibration with your monitors control panel
1.0 is linear gamma
1.8 is standard / mac
2.2 is TV and Windows PC's

so what does that mean?
Open your graphics in photoshop.
go to levels
see the middle slider?
move it above 1.8 towards 2.2 if the bulk of your sites visitors are PC users, but this will make you images look washed out to mac users.

I design on a Mac, and keep my gamma set at 2.0. The "happy medium" theory seems to work out well.
