I'm looking for some software for capturing desktop activity and creating up to 2min avi/mpg to embed in powerpoint slides.

Tried Lotus, no good. Need something good/robust to distribute to remotes using windows platform.

Any suggestions/experiences?

I don't have any experience of this so I can't give you any hard information, but this thought just popped into my head: If the desktop activity in question is not too complex, maybe you could just use Print Screen and do your own frame by frame animation.

oh boy.. there are actually lots of programs that claim to do just that, and ive used several of them. one that sticks out the most is the viewlet builder by qarbon.com. i used it about 3 years ago and remember the learning curve is low and it did just what it said on the tin. i can imagine its a better program now (one would think). i used it to do tutorials for graphics programs.

now, more specifically, i am not 100% on the creation of movie files, but the end products are good for distribution and its a robust program.

Thanks , i'l give it a try.

Tried a few more demo's this morning and most are dire - very low frame rates, no options to add any text/graphics to the output

>do your own frame by frame animation

Not an option, needs to show software being used, mouse movements etc. Needs to be high quality for a sales demo.

aspdaddy,
Try hypersnap DX-5. This tool might be the one you're looking for.

I like the screen capture built into Paint Shop Pro 7.

Camtasia or HyperCam - both capture in avi. You can choose frame rate, bit rate etc.
Get the trial version and give it a ....try.

Its a stanalone exe, so no installation required.

CamStudio(.com) records to SWF (Flash) or AVI for free and is very easy to use. The company was apparently just bought by Macromedia. Give it a try.

Thanks for all the replies. Some really good and bad suggestions there :)

I found you have to reduce color depth/screen res and to make them work well, even with latest spec machines they struggle to capture full screen at decent frame rates.

Hypercam looks the one for the job, now just need a tool to add text to the movies.
