Concurrently, the little site this campaign was running on was getting about 5 referrals per day from Google on the editorial listing side for phrases not associated with the AdWords campaign.
I inadvertently let the AdWords campaign lapse on May 31. Since then, the site has received 0 referrals from Google and a search shows it is virtually nonexistent in the rankings for phrases it did well on up until May 31.
My questions: Has anyone else seen editorial traffic from Google stop completely at the exact time an AdWords campaign ended?
I manage less than a 100 sites, however, so milage may vary. Welcome to WebmasterWorld!
Try the site search [webmasterworld.com] to read up on past issues related to the current state of affairs at Google (lots of stuff's been changing).
The AdWords campaign was for employment ("become a widget-maker) which the site has never ranked well on, nor should it.
It has, however, ranked well in non-competitive areas ("ways to build widgets," "widgets that are good for you," etc.). There are few backlinks, mostly from directories, so anchor text isn't an issue. PR has been a steady 3 before, during and after (is it over?) Dominic, so PR0 or banning doesn't seem to come into play (there is 0 spamming, hidden words, stuffing, etc.). The site launched Nov. 02, so its newness may be an issue.
I just find it hard to fathom that the last referral from Google editorial came on the last day that an AdWords campaign ran.
BTW: I reactivated the campaign so will be curious to see what happens.
