How to display ads to users who have visited my website?

I am new to using paid advertising platforms offered by Meta and Google. Many times i have noticed that i start seeing ads (in Youtube, fb and insta) of the website that i have visited. Such websites include direct visit (and not any advertising campaign) also.

Lets say i make direct visit to XyzBrandWebsite.com (direct access by typing in browser search bar) then i start seeing youtube ads as well as ads in fb of the same brand.

How to do such targeting? is it called remarketing? I am aware of very basic of remarketing.

Hi kempemorr and welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

These are "interest based" ads or "personalized" ads and they are commonly used on social media sites but also a part of Google's ads.

You can opt out of them but they don't make it simple. Most privacy policies include links to the information:
To manage Interest Based Ads (US based): https://www.aboutads.info/choices/
In EU countries: https://www.youronlinechoices.eu/
For Google Ads: https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads

I'm pretty sure there are other regional sites.

Any ad can be a personalized or interest based ad. They use your search terms or location - but it also depends on where it is shown and for display ads like AdSense, it depends on where your traffic is from and whether visitors "opt in" (or accept) your settings.

I did not understand by "visitors "opt in" (or accept) your settings". Does that mean the cookie setting permission we when we visit website for the first time?

Yes, the visitor and/or their browser settings determine whether they will be able to see personalized or interest based ads. The links I posted above explain how the visitors can opt out.

Because personalized ads are quite effective, they are used any time they are not prevented. Because your visitors don't like them, they are shown less than you might like.
