Ouch! Forgot a decimal point

... so bids were 100X more than I planned

A sob story!

Doing some work on an AdWords account two nights ago, I missed a decimal point when changing a bid and ended up with an ad group default bid of fifty dollars per click instead of fifty cents.

I spotted the error and thought I corrected it, but alas, not every place that needed it. I had added some of Google's search term "opportunities" suggestions to the ad group and those new terms ended up with the $50 bid at the keyword level. I missed that detail until tonight.

Fortunately the clicks I got from that cost under five dollars each, which was useful to know, but even so the daily budget was chewed up in a hurry for a lot less traffic than usual. Not cost-effective!

Again, fortunately (sort of), it was my own account, not a client's. So at least I didn't have the grief of having to explain to a client that I had messed up with his money.

Sigh ... live and learn!

I made the same error. However, in my case, I discovered it before running out my daily budget.
