Country Status in Google (web pages found in Australia )

Can anybody tell me what determines your site being listed in Search: the web pages from Australia (Google of course) is it domain prefix eg: .com.au or someone else in Australia said it was determined if your site is hosted in Australia or not? Does anyone have any ideas?

I have sites hosted in the states but are Aussie orientated & they do not show in the search for Aust (however are top in the general world search.
THe whois are all Aussie address'

It scared me, but I figure most people just search generally. (hmmmmmm)

Q2. Yes probably, reading your mind, the site may be very disadvantaged if the server has been down at the wrong time.

Thanks for your input. Yes my site is No1 globaly but not under sites from Australia and yes Im hoping the same as you. Some of the sites that rank on the first page under my topic are .com? So Im confused. Ive tried to e-mail Google and ask them but this, as yet nothing, Ill keep you posted if I hear anything.
Our site is Australian, based in Australia and we operate nationally and internationally but find it heaps cheaper to buy a .com and host in the USA.
If anyone else out there can add to this please let us know

Hi folks, another Aussie here.

As for your site being down when googlebot comes a'knockin - this just happened to us. We just optimised a site for one of our clients and quite unexpectedly got a PR1 for our primary keyword. Our traffic went through the roof and right before Googlebot came calling, the host closed the site for exceeding bandwidth (we didn't choose the host and have since moved the site to a new host). Googlebot came, we got dropped - timing couldn't have been worse. We're likely gonna be out of the game for a month now.

As for Australian searches on Google - I believe it is chiefly determined by the .au on the end of your url.

Interestingly - I have found that a canada only search from google.ca yields results fairly evenly split between .ca and .com domains.

I forgot to mention that the site that we optimised was a .com.au hosted outside of australia. We got a PR1 in global results for our primary keyword - and also got great page ranks for other keywords in the Australia only results.
