AdWord newb. Can I enbed adserver code in AdWord

Hi all

Long time webmaster but never used AdWord in my life.

Now I am asked to run an advertisement campaign for a large advertiser.

I am thinking of using AdWord on select content websites that are running AdSense. However, I am not able to figure out how the advertiser will track his ad prints and ad conversions?

Is there a way to use our own ad server on AdWord? I seem to understand that is not possible yet (only by invitation).

Is there a standard way for me to take an ad (be it the file, or some code) and place it through AdWord such that the advertiser can track the stats themselves?

Or will they need to access my AdWord account?

Ok, Google's advertisement world has gotten complicated.

What is this Google Display Network? Is this another way to reach publishers with AdSense on their sites?

Maybe this is what I need.

Or it looks to me that the Display Network is just a fancy name for AdWord placing ads on publisher's websites (vs on the SERPS). Am I right?

Google AdWords Display Network is the goesinta.
Google AdSense is the goesouta.

there are other goesinta's and goesouta's involved, but it does get complicated once we start exploring them.
