Over the next few weeks in the US and UK, we'll be rolling out the ability for advertisers to bid for phone calls -- in addition to bidding for clicks -- when they show Google search ads on computers and tablets.

I've been waiting to play around with something like this.

is this an admob click to call feature they are rolling into adwords.
i'd say it was fine leaving it on its own plaform, shoving more stuff into adwords doesn't make it better.....

I wonder if a knock-on effect of this will be to ban things that look like phone numbers from Adwords ads unless they're "tracked" and charged for separately.

well the phone numbers in adwords trick will only last so long.... you'll start to get calls but you won't get any clicks, so your ad will seem like it isn't performing then you'll vanish cause of low CTR.
so what if goog does track it? is goog going to give me a goog tracking number? I don't want my customers remembering or saving a goog number that i might or might not have next week.....that I might get charged per call on.

It is an option for mobile phone and tablet users. So probably it will be a "Click To Call" button (being tracked when clicked)
