I'm a noob.

It probably varies with the niche, but just very generally if you have a well written ad to a pretty specific product, what can a person expect?

Do you get 2 percent or much higher?

Thanks :) trying to figure out if I can do this.

it varies with niche, site, type of conversion, season, price, image quality, search box, font, hacker safe logo, geo region, competition... i'll stop.

you're gonna have to test it yourself.

I agree, there's no way to know except to test.

That said, in my experience as an affiliate promoting consumer products, 2% conversion to sales would be above average.

i still assert that average means almost nothing, and that making an important decision using where you think you might fall in relative to everyone, is a mistake.

I'd say a heckuva lot more than it used to. Plus if you're planning on combining it with Adsense I don't know of many profitable at it. There are exceptions to everything though.
