Are there any good quality score primers? Anything I should know to get started? I'm pretty new to this area and suspect I may have some problems in that area.
Also, I see there's some tools/communities online for this stuff. Worth the money?

I would root out everything our fearless forum leader (ewhisper, also known as bgtheory) has written on the subject first. Before I'd pay out any money for the communities. I mean, they can be useful, but you might not need to start with that.

I have a document called the Adwords FAQ that can help you. But we are not allowed to post links here. However, do a search on "lucid adwords faq" and you should have no problems finding it.
There are a few online places to learn from: PPC Coach, PPC Academy, PPC Classroom. There's plenty of books too, I have one myself. The big name in this area is Perry Marshall. Also, Google itself has lots of stuff to help out. As Netmeg said, you may want to start with that before the paying route.

On the pay side there is also Certified Knowledge (disclaimer: it's my community).
On the free side you have AdWords help files: AdWords Quality Score details: [adwords.google.com...] AdWords files: 10 things to know: [adwords.google.com...] Varian on QS: hl=en&page=guide.cs&guide=23572&topic=23574 [youtube.com...]
There's also a lot of info in these forums about quality score.

Also ewhisper (real name Brad "no relation to netmeg" Geddes) wrote a book that is so important to me that it sits on top of my microwave - which is closer to my desk than my monitor or phone.
