Overlapping keywords, same domain, different accounts?

I'm going to be doing some Google AdWords on behalf of a company already doing and running adwords. They have a large amount of broad keywords. I will be targeting long tail keywords, but this longtail will end up having some overlap with their many broad keywords. Both of our ads will be going to the same domain though. I know if you have overlap normally on ONE account, they pick the keyword with the higher quality score. However my account, and the company's account are completely separate. They will not give me any access to their accounts. How will this work?

For example if they have:
widgets

and I have:
model A widget

Who's ad will show?

Whichever has a better quality score, is bidding more, and that Google thinks is the best match for the query.

This doesn't sound like a very efficient or cost effective way to do AdWords.
