But what about the Google content network? Does the ad at position 1.0 get higher number of clicks than ad at position 3 or 4? And what about the conversion rates?
My conjecture is that the surfer first starts reading the content of the web page. Half-way through the content, the surfer takes a look the AdSense ad copy and clicks on the ad. So if the AdSense publisher is using a vertical banner, the ad copies in position 3 or 4 might get higher volume of clicks?
Actually the content network is more comlicated then that. ALot of "search engines" are actually google spawns or have a partnership with google.
Most 'search engines' are considered search, and aren't part of the AdSense program, but part of the 'search content' partners program.
The idea of tracking AdSense by position for CTR also depends a lot of how many AdSense units are being shown on the partner sites. There can be from 1-12 units on an AdSense page. So, why you might have a high CTR at position 9, you also might not be shown a lot at that position.
Unless you're in a niche area where a lot of your impressions come from a few large authority sites, so you can optimize your AdSense ads for these pages, tracking AdSense is a very difficult task with the current set of tools.
Oh! 12 ads per page? This is news to me.
Perhaps I should post this in AdSense forum - However, I'm asking these questions from the Advertiser point of view.
- Can AdSense publisher put a horizontal strip and a vertical strip on the same page? If yes, which ad copy get the position 1.0? The one in the horizontal strip?
- Which is more popular among AdSense publishers? Horizontal or vertical strip? I assume that would be vertical since you can cram more ads there.
I have seen a maximum of 4 ads for the horizontal strips. So for advertisers opting for content network, I assume it would be crucial to get an ad position of 4.0 and above?
Yes - up to 3 adsense blocks per page.
>> If yes, which ad copy get the position 1.0?
The one that appears first in the HTML of the page.
>> Which is more popular among AdSense publishers? Horizontal or vertical strip?
Depends on the site design - it's most often the vertical strip or the square box in my experience.
