Other than the effect of CTR on keywords due to the presence of negatives in campaign, any thoughts on whether the use of negative KWs--their presence in a campaign, a large or small number, etc.--would affect QS?

By using negative keywords you stop your advert appearing on less relevant searches. This means you get less impressions vs clicks and thus increases CTR.
If your CTR improves then your QS may well also improve.

I've never seen a negative impact on my QS's after adding or changing my negative keywords. I have relatively few QS issues and I think some of that can be attributed to the fact that I use a lot of negatives to improve my CTR's and conversion rates.

negative keywords have no negative impact only positive impact.. just like what T_media said.. although you only need it if you use phrase and broad.
