Keeping track of Ad modifications

I am working on a spreadsheet to track modifications (i.e. new ad words, new titles, new CPC, etc) made and the results of said changes over time. The spreadsheet is getting a bit out of control.

I am a newbie and was wondering if the experienced advertisers track each and every mod with results tied to such? If so, is a spreadsheet the best alternative for tracking results?

Interesting thread, Magnatizer - and welcome to WebmasterWorld! I'd like to ask a couple of related questions in addition to yours - if I may:

If there were a to be a 'notes' facility in your account, what things would you all want most to keep track of? What things should be automatically tracked? What things would you want to manually 'note'.

Just sort of thinking out loud here, tagging onto Magnatizer's question.

I get around this by keeping a detailed, day by day, changelog spreadsheet. A new workbook for each week.

My searches for changelog returned a large number of hits but they were all online changelogs for various products.

I am trying to study setting up a changelog so as I can be somewhat efficient from the get go. Do you know of a tutorial regarding changelog set up?

Thank You,
Mag

I would like to track:

adwords added/dropped

significant adword performance to track over time

Ad title and changes to such with results tracked

Ad body and changes to such with results tracked

Services used for the Ad Word campaign with results

Ideas for new adwords along the way

I use a database to keep track of changes I make, but would prefer it to be part of the Adwords system.

I'd love:

1) a text field attached to each ad group, where one could just write whatever they want

2) a history report, that shows what changes you made in an ad group, and when

The history report could be like:

5/5/04 Keyword Deleted: widget
4/5/04 CPC Raised: "widget blue" 0.05 >> 0.07

This is going to sound very low tech, but for each account I just keep a spreadsheet with entries like:

When________What______________________Where_____Who

01/01/05 ¦ Keyword Deleted: widget ¦campaign 1 ¦ edit_g

Sad to say it, but that's it. Monthly and weekly reports are linked from this spreadsheet.
