Phrase match acting as broad match

Any ideas how to stop this?

Just done a search query report and noticed some scary results.

one of my search querys = calgary weddings

My keywords for the ad group this triggered are all set as phrase matches some containing calgary but none mentioning weddings.
e.g. "carriage house inn calgary"

I've also just noticed that "Oaks inn niagara falls" triggered my keyword "Oakes hotel niagara falls" which is a different hotel.

The first did not work when I tested it on the ad diagnostic tool but the second did.

Any ideas why this is happening and how to stop it?

I know I could use lots of negative keywords (I've just added wedding to my campaign negative keywords) but I’ll have to add lots to each ad group and I have too many to do this unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Cheers,
Mark

The first thing I'd do is make sure that there aren't broadmatched keywords in your account and that some other word is triggering these results.

If phrase is really behaving like broad, I'd contact Google and ask them why.

You can go down the negative keyword path, but that should be unnecessary if the keyword matching options are acting appropriately.

Cheers for your help.
I've worked out the problem now. There must have been some kind of bug in my software I'm using for uploading ads. Even though the keywords are shown in "quotation marks" they are not acting like phrase matches.

Luckily this is only for the first few ads put up. The problem was fixed before I saw it, so I think I just need to delete these ads then put them back up again.

Cheers again,
Mark
