My adwords campaign has 2 ads. A text ad and a image inline ad. The text ad gets more clicks but the inline ad gets better position. I am considering adding more banner ads to the page, but the rate they get clicked on is way lower than the text ad. Is it profitable to have many different ads?

I would say that if an ad is successful, by all means keep it running. Yet I would not take away from text ads if their click rates, and conversions are going good. I personally think that the text ads are better and will get a better response. It is easier to read than to look at a piece of art and try to get its message.

So with that, I would add many ads, whatever does best keep going, and whatever does bad get rid of and make new ones. I always try to start thinking that my first ad is my worst, and my best ad can always get better.

Tweak-Test and stick with the best of the bunch

I would think the reason you're getting less clicks on the image is that less people are seeing it. Are you tracking conversions? If you can track the clicks all the way through, you can make a more informed decision on the overall program.

In general, it's good to test different creative to find out what is appealing, so as long as you keep close track of the changes you make and what worked or didn't work -
