I just increased my max cpc *10, how long does it take to see the effect on position in adwords “Ad Preview Tool”?

When the ad is on the right side, I usually see the change in position within 2-3 minutes.

When the ad is on the top, it takes longer -- I've experienced anywhere from about 10 minutes (typical) to an hour or two. And in the mean time, I can still see the ad on the right side as it eagerly waits to be promoted to the top bar.

If you look at google.com/sponsoredlinks?q=keyword you'll see the new position reflected there pretty quickly. So sometimes there can be a difference between google.com/search?adtest=on&q=keyword and google.com/sponsoredlinks?q=keyword

there has always been flaws in the estimator tool... position search impressions etc... all are questionable at best.
Waiting to see where it is is always the most accurate... even the average position seems to be a little off at times.

Chinara, I understand what you're going through. I was actually about to start a new post, when I stumbled across this one. I've never put too much faith in Google's average position stats. Starting about 2 weeks ago, Google began reporting higher than normal Avg Pos (about 1.5-2.5) on several of my top keywords (almost all "phrase" match) in a few campaigns. However, when I would check these keywords' positions, none of my ads showed higher than 6th or 7th position. I just chalked this up to incorrect Avg Pos reporting by Google, and began raising my keywords' bids to bring the positions up.

Fast forward to a week and half later, and I've increased several of these keyword bids from $.50 to $5.00 and still no improvement on position. The Avg CPC and Cost increased substantially, while the CTR and Impressions remained constant, and Google continued to show Avg Pos of 1-2. But I would search these keywords and see my ads in 8th & 9th spots. I've used the ad preview tool in different browers, on different computers, different times of the day. I've tried logged in vs not logged in, but no improvement.

The keywords in question have quality scores of Good or Great and have some of the most impressions in their ad groups. They've been in use since the campaigns were started (about 2-3 years ago) and I haven't added/edited any ads or done any recent revisions to the landing pages. There are no new competitors, and I couldn't imagine the ones that are there would increase their daily spending by 10-fold overnight.

I've returned the bids back to where they used to be, and have seen no increase or decrease in position. I am completly stumped by this one. Any thoughts?

I am still in position 6 in ad preview after a week and a bid 10 times higher. Getting really aggravated here, I hate paying more for each click without any obvious change in position or traffic volume. I called my adwords management team and spoke with optimization specialist – he said there is nothing he can improve in an adgroup because my targeting, keywords and ads are very good. He only had one suggestion that might help it has to do with landing page. I will try it this week. I tried a few proxies and saw my ad in position 3 above search results once. This is really puzzling.
