What counts as an ad impression?

How many impressions per search?

I apologize if this question has been asked 1,000 times but...

I search on Google (or a partner) for the keyword "widget" My ad comes up in the sponsored links. There is a page full of search results. I click on the bottom of the page to go to page 2 of the search results. My ad is also displayed on page 2.

My question is:

Is this considered 1 impression or 2 impressions? What about if my ad is on page 1 but not 2 and then again on page 3 and so on. Is each considered an individual impression or is the entire search one impression?

Hey Shak, Can I answer this question? Can I? Can I? :)
Anyway, as a Premium Sponsorship advertiser paying CPM, you should be more worried than us poor mortals. Why don't you call up your account manager at Google?

>> My ad is also displayed on page 2

This generally happens when there are only eight or less than eight AdWords advertisers for the keyword. The ads are shown in all the pages of the search results. Even when there are more than 8 adwords advertisers for a keyword, the ads are cycled through (after the 17th listing, the first listing is shown again) so that you will see ads when you click on any of the search result page

I feel it is counted as one impression only as all the impressions are generated by one surfer and that the ad is shown again within a short period of time.

If a surfer clicks on an advertisement, hits the BACK button and clicks on the ad again, it will (mostly) not be registered by system (fraud protection). That's because the second click was registered within a short period of time.

I would apply the same rule to impressions too.

Otherwise, I would just pause my ads, run a search for a keyword and keep clicking on the 1,2,3... pages of the search results so that my competitors keep collecting impressions. If I am jobless, bored or persistant enough, I will go from the 1st page to the 1000th page of the search result and ruin my competitors accounts... ;)
