Too Many Ad Groups And Keywords?

Hello AdWords Experts -

Just today I launched a very big campaign.. This campaign has over 200,000 keywords spread across 331 ad groups. It has taken me a few weeks to assemble and organize the keywords, ad groups, targeted ads, etc... I used the excellent AdWords Editor tool to manage all this data and upload it to my account. In fact I just finished uploading the final keywords, etc., last night.

So today I decided everything was ready, and I activated the campaign. Except I noticed that the campaign still said Paused even though I hit the "resume" button. So I double checked that the ad groups themselves were not in a paused state, but it didn't matter. No matter what I did the campaign was still saying "Paused". And then I noticed a little note at the top of my AdWords interface saying that said this:

"We were unable to process your request to add and/or edit your keywords. Adding these keywords would increase your account's total number of keywords beyond a manageable amount. Please add either fewer keywords or reduce the number of existing keywords in your account. Refining your keyword lists ensures your keywords are as targeted and relevant as possible."

I've searched the threads here and it sounds like there is a discrepancy with regard to ad group limits and keyword limits. But clearly I've reached some sort of limit... I'm hoping this is not a technical limit but rather an limit set on my particular account. And with hopes that this situation is in fact due to the latter, I e-mailed AdWords Support today. I explained to them the truth--that my keywords are highly targeted (most phrase match), broken out into extremely targeted ad groups...all with relevant text ads as well, I might add... So I'm hoping that they will perhaps "up the limit" for me. Has anyone ever had success negotiating with Google on this?

And here's a second question if I could...

As I said above, for many of the keywords in these ad groups, I'm using phrase match.. but here's the thing - I *THINK* these phrase match keywords are technically a single word..i.e., NOT really a phrase at all. You see, these particular phrase match keywords are all numbers in the following format:

"111-1"
"111-11"
"111-11"
"111-111"
"111-1111"
"111-11111"

"111-2"
"111-22"
"111-222"
"111-2222"
"111-22222"

Lots and lots of phrase match keywords like this in numerical format..

My questions:

Are these truly "phrase match" keywords if in fact there is no space between any of the characters in the keyword(s)?

Note that exact match is not an option because I would literally have millions of keywords to cover all the possible numeric combinations.. and I didn't want to do broad match because I don't want my ads showing for people searching for product model numbers, etc.... But as the keywords are today, are they truly phrase match (i.e., if I set them to broad match, would I actually see any more impressions?)

Thanks folks, I appreciate any assistance you guys can provide! :)

Regards,

- Dave

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Dave.

Has anyone ever had success negotiating with Google on this?

Yes. I've known Google to be quite reasonable in this way. Certainly, your spending power and legitimate justification for the number of keywords also plays a role in the decision.

Thanks -

I e-mailed AdWords Support and have been informed that my request to increase my keyword limit was passed onto the AdWords Technical team. We'll see how it goes! :-)

Hi Dave,

I am managing a clients account where the number of keywords managed is more than 350,000. Once we had the problem while increasing the Keywords from a reasonable numbers to the higher. We then called our Adwords Representative and explained the situation and the next day we had an increase in our Account size.

Yea, they've always been really reasonable about that with me. I think they look at your account and history to make sure you seem to know what you're doing first, though.

True enough. They'll want to check to make sure that keywords (and perhaps ad groups too) are being used effectively in the account. If not, they might reply with suggestions to delete deadwood keywords and so forth rather than raising the limit.
