Just put all 3 variants in.

[free]
"free"
free

That should do it, if it doesn't there is something wrong.

Adding negative keywords at campaign level can be less time consuming than at adgroup level, for generic negative keywords. Think of all the other "non-commercial" terms aswell like, "info", "information". I have also found Googles tool for looking for negative keywords very handy. It gives you lots of suggestions for negative keywords...

I wouldn't advise making "info" negative, oftentimes people that look for information are the ones that end up buying said product later on. If the site is well designed, they find the information they're looking for on a commercial product and can find a link to buy that product, they very well might make a return visit.

Just be careful when adding them at the campaign level depending on your products.

I've been perplexed for hours when I couldn't get an impression on an adgroup for, say, "hormone free widgets" ;)

try this with a small budget:

go ahead and target the free hosting seekers with an ad like this:

Better Than Free
Dependable hosting
for xx dollars per month.
