Google sent me a VAT refund - but why?

I'm VAT registered so I've already claimed back all the VAT that I ever paid to Google but recently google sent me a cheque as a refund for all the VAT that I've ever paid them.

How does that make sense? I can't surely claim the VAT back twice?

Have you recently advised Google of your VAT registration?

It seems they have been applying this retrospectively.

I would recommend banking the check in an interest earning account, whilst you sort it out. Explain what has happened to Google and seek advice. If this doesn't sort it, contact customs and revenue for their advice.

Speak to your accountant. In my experience, Google will simply tell you they can't advise on VAT matters.
