Keyword Syntax with negatives

Can't get negatives to work

If I define my keywords on adwords like this...

"red widgets"
"blue widgets

etc, it works fine, but when I do this...

"red widgets" -green

I get this:
"Partial punctuation is not allowed "

What's wrong with this syntax, and what's proper?

But what if I only want to exclude 'green' when 'red widgets' is matched, but not when 'blue widgets' is matched. Do I have to create a seperate ad group for this?

Yes,
I would say that you must create a new group. Negatives take account on all words within that group. Simply create 2 groups, one green, and one red, and leave the negative out of the one which you want it to still show.

Man, this site is something, every question answered, well, except the "secrets", but I believe finding those yourself is half the fun.

Just kidding, thanks folks, that worked great! I hated paying for clicks on those 'green "red widgets" ', when what I'm selling is plain "red Widgets"

LOL
