i judge the drop to be too sharp to be increased competition.
everything looks "normal" and "active" on the account.
could a small change in ad copy or target URL trigger such a huge loss of traffic, by my ad being under editorial review or for some other reason?

This is most probably the reason. Once you change something in the copy or url then you can be put "on hold" until it can be reviewed. This will especially apply to partner sites.
I think AWA advised in the past against making changes on a Friday because you could be off line for the weekend.
