I'm selling a product that shows a high commission rate, and also has a large number of advertisers.
I have a campaign going that uses as KWs generic terms to describe the product. Three KWs phrases are used:
1) A 2 word term that describes the product in general terms.
2) A one word term that names the supplier.
3) A 2 word term that names a competitor.
These 3 KWs were listed in all of G's categories, - Broad, Phrase, Exact.
In the OT search suggestion tool, these KW phrases are showing searches of 660k, 250k and 330k.
The results I got over a 3 week period were nowhere near these figures. Some were getting between 20/30 impressions a day. And the CTR was depressing too.
I also have another campaign in which I'm using suggestions from the G and OT KW sugestion lists. Of about 150+ KWs, only about 20 have not been slowed.
Again, these Kws have been used with all 3 of G's configurations. Again the CTR have been very poor.
So in total, there seems to be only about 20 KWs that are doing any good.
I've had a good look at my ads, and changed them a few times. The ads are very specific about what is being offered. Eye catching terms such as "Free" and a price are being used.
What am I missing?
The general query I have is this:
1) Is it usual then to have a number of about 20 core KWs, together with a nunmber of KWs that are being 'trialled' to see if they make the grade?
2) Could it be that KWs that don't perform today should be 'tested' in a few months time to see if there is any response? Does G allow this?
It seems to me that in any advertising campaign there is a finite number of KWs that can be used, and it's just a matter of finding these words, using them regularly, and periodically introduce other KWs that may or may not work at this time.
Thanks for your assistance.
With Google, you can guess what other people are bidding based on your ad's average position, its CTR, and the maximum CPC. If your ad has a high position (top 3), then your ad is high based on either your CTR or maximum CPC. If your CTR is below 2%, then most likely you are ranking high because you are bidding higher than anyone else. Google does reveal some of their position ranking algo for Adwords, but I'm not sure if it is possible to convert it into an exact formula.
Actually, I just looked for the old Google explanation and Google has removed it! Maybe there was something to it.
Does anyone have a copy of the old Adword position formula? I think it could be reverse engineered to figure out competitors bids.

For search volumes of that magnitude, extensive use of negative KWs would help your relevancy quite a bit. Bidding on one word KWs can be very tricky, and isn't advisible until you get more 2-4 word KWs which work, and then expand to more general KWs.
