Adwords traffic estimation

Im relatively new to adwords, however, I believe that I have a pretty good idea on what I should be doing. Im trying to get as much niched out traffic as possible for a pretty well covered industry. Incidentally this requires me to figure out how much traffic i could concievably get for the many many keywords that i am trying to test and bid on.

For whatever reason im finding the google traffic estimation tool to be really inaccurate. At times even stating there are no present bids, even though there obviously are bidders on them.

Anyhow, any ideas on why this may be happening or if that's how it always is?

On an aside, does anyone believe that it is still possible to profit from an industry that already is highly competitive? Under normal circumstances I would just attempt different products but this particular industry is what I work in so it really would be beneficial to make it happen.

The google estimates have never been anywhere near accurate for me, ive only been with adwords for a few months so i am no expert however i feel that the adds take a couple of days to start getting a decent amount of clicks.
I usually find the estimates to be 5 times more than the actual results but i am still playing arround with the features.
