How do you find out what the CPC is for a keyword?

How can I find out what the CPC is for a few keywords I am interested in? I am a newbie still reading up on things. I know I once saw such a listing that listed the top websites and what they paid per click.

Try going to Overture and typing in your keyword, go down to the bottom of the page, click "view advertisers max keyword bid". Fill in the security code and viola, there you are.

You can't tell directly what the bids are on AdWords.

You can use the adwords traffic estimator to get a rough Idea. Fill in the keywords you want and add a very high (50$) max bid and you can see what the CPC of the max bidder approx is. This is rough but gives some ballpark figures.

When setting up a new campaign, type in a single keyword. Adwords then suggests a bid. As I understand it this suggestion is the maximum current bid for that keyword.

That is correct updown. Your actual placement will be based on both your max bid and the CTR of your individual keywords
