Anyone know how to figure out what the top bid is on Google like you can on Espotting and Overture. If I'm not top I never know if it's because someone has bid more than I have or if their click rate is better than mine. (And I'm too lazy to spend time fiddling with my creatives ;-)
Also, does anyone know if a new advertiser starts with a "high" CTR which gets adjusted downwards or if they have to "prove" themselves in order to get better positioning?
thanks

enter your maxbid as £30.00 (not sure what top whack is in US maybe $50.00).
Your top placed competitors bid will be one penny/once cent less than your actual CPC. So if your actual CPC becomes £23.98 your competitors max bid is £23.97.
On your second query, I suspect that you start with at a zero rating and have to prove yourself, but maybe someone else on this board can clear this up for you.

Yep, $50.00 is correct in the US.

Yes, you can this - but be aware the competitive landscape out there is changing moment to moment. So the information you get in one moment may well be outdated in the next.
There is indeed an "average default CTR" that you get when you get started and that is updated with your performance data over time.
Right. Simply put, it is the average CTR for that keyword, as used by others, at that moment.

Here's a couple other threads that expand upon that point (both contain good info from AWA):

Is this true? Doesn't the relative CTR come into the equation as well. eg if the competitor CTR was double yours then he would only be paying about half your CPC?
I have found the best way to find the max bid for a keyword is when setting up a new advert. The suggested bid that appears seems to be the maximum current bid for that keyword.
