If your main keyword is widgets, is there a way to
do wildcards or similar such that ANY gibberish typed in as a search time before widgets such as :
any_gibberish widgets could deliver your ad?

Yes, it's very simple. :) In the box where you enter your keywords, you just enter the word, no quote, no brackets, ie:

widget

Thats it :) Be careful to watch your logs very closely for negative words.

keyword = broad match
[keyword]= exact match
"keyword" = phrase match
-keyword = negative match

'https://adwords.google.com/select/faq/account.html#keywords
(I think you have to login for this)

Be careful. Depending on the target market, broad matches will usually have a very low CTR. And you'll also run the risk of being slowed or disabled.
