I read posts that talk of bog money to get to the top but i guess thats in a field where there is major competition like mobile phone for instance?

This is very dependent on both the industry and how the competition runs their accounts.
There are campaigns that have premium positions paying very little per KW, and others that pay several dollars per click.
Often those paying $$ per click have the budgets to keep paying and may be a little looser in occasionally posting a KW, and these KWs more often show up in articles so they are more publically known.
Those who pay very little per click for the top spots are more tight lipped about their KWs as they don't want additional competition to ruin their good runs, so you don't hear about these nearly as much.
This gives the impression that premium spots are very expensive, when it's not necessarily true for all KWs.
