AdWords & PopUps

What's the referring URL the editors use when reviewing ads?

When AdWords editors review ads, what is the refering URL? When running ads to some sites, popups have been enabled via the Google toolbar so they will show if the click through URL has a popup.

There are no popups that I can see on some of these sites when I click through from Google. Based on communications with the merchant I believe they have the site configured so that if the referring URL comes from Google the popup will not show. If it comes from a domain other than Google the popups do show.

The ads all got removed due to popups.:( Do the editors review ads by clicking though the same URL as the searcher or is it some different domain?

If so, how can we run popups to anyone who does not come from Google and still use AdWords?

Woaaah.. neat trick. But it doesn't work huh?

You are basically trying to violate AdWords TOS. I know some advertisers who do this by taking off the popups just before an ad copy goes for a review. Once the ads start showing up in the partner sites too, the popups are introduced. But this is obviously a big pain in the a..

If the domain trick that you are mentioning doesn't work, I would recommend NOT inserting the popup on the destination URL only. Google has no problems if you have popup in all the other pages of your website.

For once, I don't expect AWA to answer this ;)

No, the goal is not to violate the AdWords TOS. The merchant wants to show popups but wants to advertise on Google. If Google users do not get popups when they come from AdWords if the ad are running only on Google, would this be a problem?

Now that clears up things a lot.

Why happens if the destination URL in the ads is something like [mysite.com...]

Obviously, this will be the referring URL which everybody, including the editors will be viewing. So just configure the merchant site such that if referrer URL contains?source=adwords, do not show the popups.

um.. yeah.. I know.. sounds too simplistic..
