can adwords affect SERPS?

In either a positive or negative way?

New sites want traffic now .. also want longer term SERPS traffic from Google and others..

Anyone have any evidence that starting ppc with adwords might:

1. Slow down google including your new site in the normal index or persuade it somehow not to give you first page normal rankings ..

or

2. Speed up inclusion and improve rankings because you are obviously such nice people and Google supporters.

Call me a cynic but I wonder if anyone else has pondered over this?

I asked a google representative about this issue and was assured that adwords is 100% seperated from the SE listings. According to them, it will neither hinder or help your listings.
