Basically I have a large account with lots of campaigns and hundreds of ads
across a wide range of keywords. Often we have well over 100 ad groups in a
campaign...
For many of my ads I notice that if I have, say for example, 20 or 30
keywords – a few of them get impressions – but loads of them don’t actually
get any at all (even when I know the bid price is high and Im not banned or
anything like that)
Also I come across the situation where I have a bid for a very broad keyword
"widgets" and I bid good money for it – the predicted traffic is really
high. Then I look and the average position is high but Im just not getting
many impressions on the word – but for the impressions I am getting the ctr
is above 20%. So they cant be serving the ad very much.
This happens loads and in particular I did a test to prove the point - i did
an ad for broad term "snip" and bid over the maximum they suggested (a
ridiculously high ammount just for the test)- they predicted over 200 clicks
per day!. The first day I got 22 impressions on the ad only but 5 clicks, so
a really good ctr - the second day I got no impressions at all and none
since - although I havent been dissalowed, dissaproved, slowed down -
nothing!
Do you have any ideas what Im doing wrong - Im really eager to start getting
some impressions on all these keywords Ive pain stakingly researched and
written good ads for?
Thanks
Paul

You could try setting up a campaign with one ad group containing the keyword you are testing, with a high budget. You'll need to run it for a few days before it reaches its maximum potential - initially ads are shown on Google only, then a few days later on partner sites and content targeting.
Col
do you have a lot of negative keywords that is cutting down your impresions? and have your ads been approved for G partner sites yet, as that also increases traffic quite a bit?
if you have ads for widgets, blue widgets, and blue fuzzy widgets, then the search total for widget will include the other two kws, and blue widgets will also include the blue fuzzy widget term. those 3 ads will now compete with each other to see which is actually displayed.
if your blue widget ad is a phrase or broad match, and has a higher cpc than blue fuzzy widgets, then blue fuzzy widgets will get very little impressions, as blue widgets will be shown instead.
