Exact Match and Content Targetting

How does it work?

My understanding is that with content targetting Adwords, Ads are returned in response to some algorithm matching Keywords within the sites content with keywords created for the particular Adword Ad returned.

However if one has set up only exact matches i.e "[blue widgets]" for a particlar AdGroup. Any guesses on how Google determines that the Content is an Exact match?

I would understand if as an extreme example there was a site with the only the words "Blue Widget" and the Ads were returned. However if the content was "I am passionate about blue widgets and love the way blue widgets shimmer in the dawn" then I would not expect the Ads to be returned, except if the keywords were broad matched keywords or Phrase matched keywords.

In other words I would expect to see very little if any impressions from content targetting for exact matched keywords, but on some of my adwords this is not the case!

I seem to be getting a bucketloads of poor converting impressions, I know I could turn content targetting it off but I am interested in finding out how exact matching works for content trgetted ads.

Any ideas on how this scenario works or how people think it works would be appreciated?

very interesting question.

I started running some test on this but got bored, so left it half way.

Equiano

I've experienced the same as you. Only exact matches and a truckload of non-converting content targetted traffic.

I tracked most content sites down and they made sense from a "matching" perspective but how this exactly works beats me (and I'd like to know as well).

Equiano, I'm looking into your questions, and will post again when I know more.

Gotta put my head together with AdSenseAdvisor first though.

More later. ;)

Doesn't it say somewhere in the FAQ, that matching options do not apply to content targeting?
