Who is regional targetting targetted to?

Not convinced it's for me...

I'm getting the idea that regional targetting is mainly for those who have a tough time getting top Adwords positions with keywords that don't include a geographic identifier or are more generic, ie. widget maintenance vs. Alaska widget maintenance.

Lucky for me I don't have a tremendous amount of competition for my Adwords positions so my ad comes up in the top position even on my most "generic" keyword. The only advantage in regional targeting I can see is that users interested in my topic but who are not in my geographic area won't see my ad. This might save a few erroneous click-throughs, but other than that I don't see why I would do it.

Am I missing something here?

thanks,
Bev

In my experience setting up PPC for local companies, many people who are looking for a barber shop in Los Angeles will go to Google and type in, "barber shop." Sometimes many more than will type, "Los Angeles barber shop."

This will allow the geographically limited to grab a share of that keyword without having to pay for garbage traffic from people who are looking for a barber shop in Louisiana.

True, those "erroneous clicks" could add up to $$$ wasted after a while.

I wish Google would offer regional targetting with their regular search results submissions as well!

Guys regional targetting works by detecting the geographical location of the user's ip not by the keyword being entered into the search query. For example, it might detect that you are in Miami and serve you a regional ad for "South florida used car dealer" if you type in "used car dealer" on the query.

After all, what good is it for you to see the ad for a used car dealer in Conneticut. This is great for those business that do not have any interest on selling to customers far away due to the kind of service or product they provide, and that they use the internet to get people to walk in the door.

Re-read my post, we are in agreement. Joe Blow looking for Florida real estate will type in "real estate." This helps the realtor target Joe Blow in Florida, while not having to pay for searches from everywhere else.
