What constitutes a scraper?

If I make a blog about widgets and I copy and paste widget reviews from other sources... while running adsense ... am I in violation?

What about 50% original content and 50% reviews/articles from other sites (with proper credit given to original source) ...

it just seems like a grey area.

It isn't a grey area. Copyright law is very clear.

Cutting and pasting other people's content is infringement (a.k.a. theft), and providing a credit or link to the original sources doesn't change that. If you aren't careful, you could lose your AdSense account and your search listings.

ThePaul - if you are serious about this, you would have to make it "opt in" in some way.

Contact the sites who's content you'd like to use and get permission from the administrators, letting them know you are going to link-back, etc. You may be surprised.

IMO scrapers are a grey area because they dress themselves up as search engines, taking snippets of text from sites far and wide.

If you are targeting specific sites to pilfer reviews from, this is not a grey area. This is copyright theft and I'm sure the companies involved would take action once they find out about it.

Flammers save your fuel. I don't have any such site. I just want to understand the Adsense policy and law when it comes to "scrapers". I might want to start a blog type site in the future that talks about widgets.

If the #1 site for widgets has a review about the new model of widget and its features... and then I make a blog entry saying "#1 Widget site has a review today on the new model of widgets.. I think these widgets are going to be great and heres why" .. am I a scrapper or even on the border? Please note that I am not copying and pasting the content in this scenario.

Nope, that's not a scraper at all. If you are writing a review, even a review on a review, defintely not.
Actually, that's how many news papers and news sites makes their stories, citing others!
Use your own wording and make your own opinion, don't just reword the whole article or you will be accused.
If you do it that way, that's not even a gray area, is called "fair use".

Who's flaming you? You posed a scenario that was clearly a serious violation of copyright and we saved you a bucketload of legal problems for free, and you're welcome.

Linking to reviews and writing your own commentary could not remotely be considered copyright infringement.
