Submit everywhere you can, ask for link trades or back links, etc. Remember with 1 link to a website that is #1 ahead of you is you, going piggyback to the top. More clicks to your site that way and if X sees that Y, a presumably popular site, lists you then others will link to you without asking. Put a bookmark this site/make it your homepage script on your page...don't be shy, all's fair as long as you keep it ethical.....try to become a household word. How?
Someone posted, I'm sure jokingly, to aim for pregnant women with broadband. Lots of forums out there about all types of subjects to join and actually participate in plus most will allow links.
You can figure out the best type of individual to aim for, the above was just a 'for instance'.
Good luck,
Ann
of course we will likely never see google add this feature but i am going thru great lengths to finding and blocking these advertisers..
i refuse to waste ad space on my site like this.. like i said, i would rather use this space for better earning ads..
Plus it gives a bump to your prestige with other sites looking for someone to trade links with or an authority site (like yours) to link to..Some links you may never know you got.
I have thousands of people who visit me from bookmarks and links from other websites so don't discount return traffic.
Once they finish reading they will usually click an ad to go read somewhere else, sometimes even make a purchase before leaving.

Be careful with this!
Across my site the SAME exact ads can pay between 7 cents and 50 cents. It has to do with what keyword combination triggered the ad with the different content from page to page.
So... it is not always a low paying advertiser. Sometimes they just bid less for certain keywords within their campaigns. I've seen this phenomenon consistently, so I never block advertisers for this purpose alone.
<edit>typo</edit>
everyone gets good clicks now and then.
basically my point is when i get these 3 cent ads i'm actually loosing money because i could be using that space for my other advertisers that pay more.
if we were able to set a price to only allow ads that meet a threshold then when there aren't any ads available i could swap them with my ads..
That's your solution then, dump adsense.
Adsense is free to join and free to quit, no long term contracts or something like that. So If you think Adsense is a waste of time, space and money, quit using it and problem solved.
In my case I found myself google as a great tool for making extra money and in the long term, why not a full time income. But that's just me.
If you can get the #1 site to link to you or trade links with you then your site name in their link list is up there #1 as long as that persons website remains so even though your site may be on page 50 in the serps.
Ah, I see what you mean, thanks very much Ann. That's an important point, and I'll need to work on that more.
I make sure that my sites get on the major directories, and specialized niche directories for a similar reason. Because I have found that there are sites that actually create links to relevant resources, without thinking about PR, ranking, search engines, etc. They actually will use directories to help create their list of relevant links. So even if the clickthrough from the directories isn't always high, there are other benefits.
Anway, I didn't mean to get this off topic...
My site average CPC is decent, in the middle double digits, but there are pages where the CPC was well under ten cents (and the CTR was poor too), and they have AdSense code no more. And on the other hand, there are other channels that consistently perform better--I try to write more pages like those.
I currently have about 50 pages, my main site has been number #1 on Google off and on for the last three years and lists within the first five results on all the other major engines under its most relevent keywords. Clicks in my category used to pay over a $150.00 are now less than .05 cents.
