UK or USA?

Shall I sign up to US or UK?

I am currently making a website that I plan on using Adsense to make money from, but I'm from the UK.

I was wondering if I should/could sign up to the US version.

My hopes are high and I'm planning on this site to be global, not just UK based, so if I had UK adsense would it just show UK adverts that maybe most of my target audience won't be interested in?

Thanks

Hazzy, welcome to WebmasterWorld!

It doesn't matter where you sign up. With AdSense there is no such thing as a local account. Your account will be global and targeted ads will be displayed around the world independent of your own location.

Thanks

When you sign up you put your country, so the question is, a publisher in the US is getting payed same like a publisher in India as an example?

I guess so. I don't think there is any evidence that Google discriminates non-US publishers.

Obviously a US citizen will get less because google will deduct tax from source or at least file with the IRS about the amount made.

You donīt have any choice really, you must declare where you live, you can say you live in Outer Mongolia but donīt be suprised when they refuse to deliver your check to Washington DC .

But there is locality with AdWords.

I'm not sure how AdWords does their site geography, whether it's based on domain (.com, .us, .uk, etc) or IP or where the owner resides, but advertisers can pick which countries the ads are displayed for.

The ads are selected based on the country or region of the visitor, not the location website or country of the website owner. AdWords only tries to match the visitor with the ads. The website of the AdSense publisher is not more than a carrier of the ads.

No idea about how adwords work but let me ask you a question (to those who also know about adwords)

Adword people pay the same to a click from USA like they pay to clicks from Iran lets say?

Adword people pay the same to a click from USA like they pay to clicks from Iran lets say?

The price payed by an AdWords advertiser for a click on an ad displayed on the website of an AdSense publisher is determined by three factors.

  1. The bid price. This is the maximum price the advertiser wants to pay
  2. The amount of competition. If he is the only advertiser bidding for a specific keyword, he will never pay more than $0.05, even if his bid price for the keyword is $10.00. If there is more than one advertiser, he will never pay more than $0.01 above the bid price of the second highest bidder.
  3. Smart-princing, a discounting system that Google applies for clicks that have a low chance to convert

Many advertisers have split their campaign in regions. They use higher bid prices for regions where there is a high potential of converting visitors. This will influence the bid price mentioned in point 1.

Many advertisers also restrict their campaigns to specific regions. Therefore there can be 10 competing advertisers for a keyword in one country, but only 2 in another. This influences the amount of competition mentioned in point 2.

Maybe the region where a visitor lives influences the smart-pricing algorithm, but this is unknown. So maybe point 3 is also region dependent.

As you see there are many reasons why a click from country A might generate more money than a click on the same advertisment, but with the visitor originating from country B.

If Hazzy wants global traffic it is better to use a U.S Host rather than a UK host...It does make a difference.

Erm - why? My site is a .com site hosted here in the UK and my site traffic is mostly US. No problems whatsoever.

I did not mention that the TLD in my previous post. Most of mine are co.uk. They used to be on a UK host and I got traffic X With the U.S host I now get X + 100%

It is to do with the IP address of the server. Google use that on many occasions and depends or effects surfer location, and wether or not they have set up some filters to include or exclude sites from certain regions.

I find UK hosts anyway uncompetative either in price or features compared with U.S Hosts. I hope you dont have to buy xtra bandwidth!

Hazzy –

As lammert said, AdSense uses geo-targeting to increase the relevancy of your ads to your users. For example, the ads your U.S. users see will be different than those your Australian users see.

If you would like to preview the ads that your global users see, you might be interested in downloading the AdSense preview tool.

For more information, you should see the following pages:

Good luck!
