Adsense on Forum Site?

Does Adsense allow Forum sites, what about targeting?

Hi Everyone,
I've seen so much excellent information on this site that I think I'm finally ready to implement Adsense on my site (gets ~700 visitors/day).

The only thing is that my site is a Forum.

Does Google allow Adsense to be placed on Forum sites (non gambling, non adult, etc..)?
If so, what has your experience been with Google's abililty to feed the right target ads on a forum site?
Do the keywords get all messed up because of the content of the posts within the forum?

I hope someone can answer this.
Thanks to all... Webmasterworld is a terrific resource!

Forums are allowed. The general consensus is that asdsense does not perform well on forums but my experience has been the opposite.

As for feeding the right target ads on a forum site, I've had no problems what so ever.

It depends on the forum software you're using, how engine friendly it is and last but not least, your content.

Good Luck! :)

Hi Petra,
Thanks for your info. I use phpBB. Not sure if it's search engine friendly. I could probably change it.
May I ask what kind of forum software your using?

You can use Adsense on forums, but the results suck.

I've tried everything. Small ads, Big ads, bright colors, subtle colors, top placement, side placement, bottom placement, rotating ads with images, single ad units, multiple ad units, ads mixed in with text, ads seperate from text, banners ads, box ads, with AdLinks, without AdLinks - makes little difference.

CTR is awful. Well under 1%.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'll listen, but the readers of my forums just don't want to click on Adsense ads. The rest of the site does quite well.

mrdomainnames,

I'm also using phpBB. One important caveat if you integrate in AdSense. Don't put it in the overall header and footer template files. This causes the ads to be included in the administrative and index pages, which would be a violation of the AdSense ToS. Try just putting it in the "viewtopic_body.tpl" file so that you only serve ads on full content pages.

Yes and thatīs a fact? I have tried AdSense on many forums with no good results. On forums people like to discuss things - not click on ads. I would recommend not using ads on forums. The income is very small and ads could have other negative results on a forum/online community.

Well I must disagree. I have been running Adsense on my forums since December and had "decent" results. I had a very low CTR ratio like most people. Now I only show the ads on topics plus I show a large rectangle ad to visitors and only show a small banner to members. For the members I only show an ad every five page views. Since then my CTR and overall earnings have more than doubled.

It can be done but it takes alot of studying what works and what doesn't. Knowing php or whatever language your forums use it a must to be able to show ads in such a custom way.

I disagree guys. i run a site with about 40,000 page views epr day, and unfortunately it relates to terms which do not do well in terms of adsense, but on my forum i get about 2.5x higher epc on a consistent basis for the 2,000 views or so per day on it

My EPC is fine too. Ads are well targetted. However as I said before, my CTR sucks.

It's always sucked and despite all the variations and changes I've made, it still sucks. Nothing I do results in my readers clicking on Adsense.

I think this is normal. Forums tend to attract the same people back again and again, and those people have probably clicked all they're going to click. They also don't go to the forums to buy things. The you have to add in the fact that one reader might load 10 or more pages while viewing threads and responses, so bumping up the pageviews.

My forum does generate a few dollars, enough to pay hosting I guess, but compared to the rest of the site it greatly underperforms in terms of revenue per pageview.
