Skyscraper vs. Leaderboard?

Which performs better?

With all the talk about leaderboard ads increasing CTR, would this be a better choice than the 120x600 skyscraper? My CTR varies so much it would be impossible to test.

On long pages skyscrapers may perform better, plus with a little coding you can make them stay in place while scrolling.

But leaderboards may grab their attention before they havetime to scroll and/or click away.

Anyone else have experience with this?

It does largely depend on your setup. My experience is leaderboard is the leader.

But others swear by 3 columns, one for the menu, one for the content and the third for Google Adsense.

Another trick I learned here is that if the only place on the page to click is the ad you will get many more clicks. Makese (ad)sense and it does bear out in the results...

only place on the page to click is the ad

Hmm...so much for user navigation 101..

Speaking of Skyscraper & 3-column layouts... could someone describe the CSS for 3-column setup that gives the minimum required space for the adsense skyscraper in the right-column, a relative percentage "adjusting" center column for content, and left column that balances the right reasonably well? Thanks in advance.

You might try the css forum. I have always had trouble getting css working well myself. Always one browser or other that had unexpected problems. Can't wait until the standards stick and work well across platforms.

I just switched from the skyscraper to the leaderboard. It's right at the top of my site... even my logo had to come down a slot. We'll see what the impact is, but people can't say they aren't noticing it.

Too bad the leaderboard leaves too much space, and results in a plain ugly look. It's even worse as the font doesn't even match that of my site.

In the publishing business, it's normal for paid advertising to look different from editorial content.

You can make the font, as well as the background and border, any color you want.

europeforvisitors,

Is there some way to get rid of the white space? there are usually 3 lines and tons of space's left unused...

is google hearing about this? ;)

Not that I know of, since we aren't allowed to fiddle with the code.

It's only been a day, but I'd say the leaderboard is working better than the skyscraper. That said, I've gone and put a skyscraper ad up on all my pages advertising something else, so that'll be pulling against the results. I suppose the best thing is to strip away everything but the Google Ads for the best results.
