I'm pretty sure this is technically possible - I used to place affiliate ads when I detected adblockers. However, the conversion rate so pitiful that I decided it wasn't worth annoying anyone with them...

Anyway, it occured to me that it may be worth selling ad space and only filling the slots when an adblocker is detected. For me this would still account for tens of thousands of impressions a day.

Just wondered if anyone had tried this approach? And would it actually be necessary to tell the advertiser that this approach is used?

I think it would be very unwise--to say the least--not to tell the advertiser that their ads will only ever be seen by people using an ad blocker. It is in everyone's interest, both yours and the advertiser's, to make sure those ads elicit a reaction of “If all ads looked like that, I would never have had to bother with an ad blocker, so I’ll stick around” rather than a reaction of instantly closing the tab.
