Is there any way of checking if the Adsense on a website is running personalised or contextual - other than the obvious ads showing products you've looked at. Is there are particular cookie that is dropped?

Would be interested for 2 reasons: firstly to see what sites are doing in terms of consent if they are running personalised ads. And second, to know how easy it would be for someone to spot these and report you/them.

Ummm yes. Google a big hosting company, and open your site. If you see the ads about the hosting company, then it's personalized ads.

I have noticed that hosting companies tend to target personalized ads.

go and search for a hotel in dublin next weekend on booking.com, click through, look at couple of the places, then watch those ads follow you around for WEEKS!

in my experience, booking.com ads are the absolute worst for stickiness of personalised ads

You can. Open the dev console (network tab) and look out for ad requests with &npa=1 in the URL. That means that the ad will be non personalized.
