Google releases AdSense Auto Ads, which uses machine learning to make "smart placement and monetization decisions on your behalf."

  • Optimization: Using machine learning, Auto ads show ads only when they are likely to perform well and provide a good user experience.
  • Revenue opportunities: Auto ads will identify any available ad space and place new ads there, potentially increasing your revenue.
  • Easy to use: With Auto ads you only need to place the ad code on your pages once. When you’re ready to use new features and ad formats, simply turn them on and off with the flick of a switch -- there’s no need to change the code again.

    >>(I'm curious as to know whether, if I hide my older ads using a media-query rewrite, I can use auto-ads on a mobile but stick with the manual ones on desktop. I'll go and have a fiddle.) <<

Since I use AMP, it's quite easy to do this, incidentally.

    <amp-ad media="(min-width: 824px) AND (max-width:1088px)" layout="fixed-height" height="250" type="adsense" data-ad-client="ca-pub-XXXXXXXX" data-ad-slot="XXXXXXXX"></amp-ad>

...will only show an ad for those particular screen sizes.

It's not obvious from the writeup, but auto ads only work on mobile, not on desktop.

    I'm seeing them on desktop.

    That's interesting.

"Convenience: Auto ads work on mobile, tablet, and desktop" says the documentation now. That's new.

Ah, and I'm using AMP-Auto-Ads, which say:

"Amp Auto ads will currently only show for users using a mobile device. Please test your site in a mobile device to see AMP auto ads."

AMP Auto Ads should be only on AMP pages. I'm using WordPress' AMP third party plugin so I can easily insert code into header that won't load on non AMP pages.

I was seeing tons of ads on mobile & desktop-- a little crazy actually-- and then after about 1.5 hours they have all but disappeared. Almost no ads displaying at all now. I have a pretty large site and since mid-December had seen a large drop in coverage. I was hoping that these ads might improve that. I wasn't loving the placement but was willing to test a bit. But now there is virtually nothing there.

I had Auto Ads for one week now, and Adsense revenue for that period is exactly a half of what it was compared to similar periods before. As for ad placements, it's good, not too many ads and the site looks OK. I am not sure if I should give them more time or go back to my old manual placements.

Not true. I saw them all over desktop.

Starting to see much better placement on desktop content. Mobile content seems to be a no brainer with this, but desktop was really...really... i mean reallllly sparse for a bit. Now i'm seing good placement - not too many ads but long form content is starting to pay off more.

So, I use AMP for everything (mobile and desktop views), and have been using amp-auto-ads. These only work for mobile devices (they seem to inject ads into iPad views, but not desktop). So, I essentially force ads to display on desktop where they always have, but now just trust amp-auto-ads for mobile.

As I implemented the code, I thought I was making quite a big mistake. For me, placement appears limited to the bottom of the pages, and there are many instances where I'm not seeing very many at all.

Well, page CTR is up 18%; page RPM is up 32%, and overall revenue is up too. They're staying; and I'm going to implement the standard auto-ads across my non-AMP pages.

@ByronM You might be seeing good placements, but it could be different for your readers and there's no way you can track them.

@James Auto Ads for AMP works good in terms of revenue?

Yes, it works well. AMP in general. Makes coding a website really very simple. :)

Well shoot, guys. I'm still not seeing any ads, and the report still shows "No Data". I have about 80,000 pageviews a day (99.6% from the US), and about 50% are mobile, even though the site isn't really optimized for mobile.

What am I doing wrong? Or is it only really going to work on mobile-optimized pages?

Is there any way of altering the background colour of the adverts? My site background is black, and these adverts have a white background.

I'm going to leave them for a while to see if they alter, but I don't like them in their present form.

It's 2018, @csdude55, please optimize your site for mobile :D

I've been working on it, but honestly, I'm veeeeery hesitant! Mobile ads seem to pay about 1/4th of my desktop ads, and from what I can tell, mobile users contribute less and look at fewer pages per session. So I might be working hard to rebuild my site to be mobile friendly, and end up with less pageviews and a lower RPM for my efforts.

A topic for another thread, though, maybe.

My point here is that I haven't seen any of these ads, at all. Others on here said that they show up on both mobile and desktop, but I haven't seen them on either.

I've been working on it, but honestly,...

Things are that, all the "silly" (no hard feelings) new generation who is growing up with a smartphone, will rarely use a desktop later in their life for Internet surfing, they'll continue to be in use of small screens and simplistic page layout, or even not even page, but just app.

That's very true, Travis. But you know, it was only about 7 years ago that the cell phone wars were about who could make them SMALLER. It's only recently reversed, and now they're getting bigger.

So I guess I've been hoping that the technology is going to take another shift, maybe evolving back towards tablets or something with actual keyboards. Because, honestly, if it continues on this path then (IMHO) most of the "free" internet is going to die away, with nothing left but Google, social media, Amazon, and Ebay.

I added this Auto Ads and was happy at first seeing they would appear in places where Id have to tamper with the coding to add so I was thinking wow this is awesome Adsense is adding ads for you without having to do the extra work

but sadly nobody is clicking these native ads, at all.

Just out of curiosity, how many ads per page (on average) is Auto Ads showing?

I assume that's going to vary with the length of the page, but I'm wondering if Auto Ads are being doled out conservatively or with gusto.

It depends on the page and content I assume

I know on mobile I get more ads for some reason, my responsive theme when I check on my smart phone it will show more ads on the homepage and when I click and article it shows that related ads with articles in between ads on the bottom of the article

on desktop on my articles I only get two ads, two weak native ads in the article and I usually have multiple paragraphs.

All I know is they don't pay, nobody clicks the ads, my regular responsive ad gets clicks

So from my experience I get more ads on mobile since I have all the ad unit types enabled but on desktop I get fewer ads.

I too get a lot more on mobile. Desktop only does 2 ads by itself, i had to re-enable manual placement for 2 other spots in desktop but mobile is chugging right along... guess this is a hint that mobile is where its at...

After a few weeks I had to turn off auto text and display ads. Placements were still really bad and breaking the design. Everything else is fine with auto ads.

    Could be up to 8.

That's even worse than my local newspaper's horrible Web site, which averages about seven ads per page.

Something strange happened, in the past few days Auto Ads are no longer showing on my website, its like they just stopped adding ads to my website.

The only adsense ads showing are the ones I placed which are 3 ads.

When I first installed the auto ads in my header on genesis theme ads were popping up now no more

Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent auto ads from controlling ads ONLY on the homepage on a wordpress site?

    Thanks

Guys, i decided to activate only the auto ads on AMP pages. I use ampforwp plugin to create the amp version of my blog posts and with this plugin i can chose with article i want to be load in amp and wich one not. So, just to have a confirmation by you experts, if i activate AMP auto ads and not normal auto ads i will have automatic ads ONLY on the blog post that will load with amp right?
