Adsense CPM Bids vs. Clicks

A Monthly Trend Continues...

I had a look at my monthly figures from January to June of this year and I found an interesting trend. While clicks still make up the majority of my Adsense earnings, CPM bids are making up a consistently larger share of the pie. I don't mind since, according to the metrics, CPM actually provides me with a higher RPM compared to clicks.

(Sadly both RPMs are dropping)

Is anyone else seeing this CPM trend? Could it be that Google is taking Adsense in this direction?

They're not making a big push for it on the AdWords side, so I would say probably not. Check your third party networks in the AdSense panel and see if some of those CPM ads come from there.

There is a bigger emphasis on ad viewability on adwords and users who start to focus more on this may be using cpm instead of cpc. Also, try to see if your advertisers have significantly changed recently.

When I look at my adsense report and select "bid type" as a dimension it shows CPC bids, CPM bids, etc.

Next to each one is the number of clicks that each received.

Question, are my readers actually clicking on these CPM bid ad units or is Google calling them clicks even though they are not clicks? I just don't understand why there isn't a dash there if nobody is actually clicking the CPM ad units.
