The "mute this ad" feature is very helpful in honing the quality of the ads, and it's always been worth me putting the effort into getting better performing ads.

I have noticed recently that many sites with AdSense are showing horrible, and sometimes inappropriate ads. Come on publishers, it's your livelihood, wake up and smell the coffee. :)

Now with ‘Mute this ad’, when a user clicks on the Mute button "[x]" and completes a short survey, when possible, the ad disappears from the page and the space previously occupied by the ad collapses smoothly, allowing the content surrounding the ad to fill the space.Google AdSense "Mute This Ad" Now With Improved Functionality [adsense.blogspot.com]

When you say better performing, you mean better ads suited to things you might want?

Because this mute ad feature seems to be consumer facing, it helps make sure the people visiting publisher sites, see the ads tailored to their style.

Exactly. The better the ads, the better the user experience, and the better the user experience, the better my earnings are likely to be.

But mute this ad only effects what you see doesn't it, rather than what other site users see? It's an end-usr tool not a publisher one. Publishers have the ad review centre to achieve similar effect.

Yup, it's user oriented, and if you don't select "mute this ad" it won't improve the user experience overall. Google must be using the survey to measure ads, and to improve the ads, as they've indicated. So it's going to be worth your while.
