visitor clicks a Google Ad on the site, the Ad opens in the same page
Can we do something so that whenever a site visitor clicks on a Google Ad, it will open in a new tab or a new window?

Nope, that's the deal you get, otherwise it wouldn't be fair to advertisers. If you can somehow manipulate the code to open in a new window, I believe Google will ban you.

You can use DFP to show Adsense ads, and set them to open in new window..

Hadn't heard about that, but after reading a few sites, it seems to be a bone of contention, and potentially conflicts with google's TOS - use at your own risk I'd say.

The fact is, they are purposely navigating away, so why try to hold on?

Hmmm...ostensibly they are clicking on an ad, semantics, however I have seen on some sites, and especially so with full ad leaderboards, where they actually do open in a new window.

I don't know if this is a Premium Publisher benefit or whatever but it does exist.

Like Levo set, use DFP to serve your AdSense and set "Network Settings" to Target = _blank. It will switch your entire AdSense Account to open Ads in a new Window.

However if you mainly serve AdSense I would advice against it.
It is a grey area and even though it is possible does not mean that Google will not punish you for that.

which translates into:

In addition to target = blank I would like to stress that this is only permissible if you have not only run AdSense for that ad space. So, create a display area for the sole purpose, to open about AdSense ads in a new window is a violation of AdSense policies to which even the Google Ad Manager users are bound.

Uh, thanks DaStarBuG. I've always assumed that it is allowed with DFP, since they could have easily disabled it just for Adsense ads.. Sorry for suggesting that...

Not to mention that I tried it some years back and it seemed like it grossly inflated my impressions which made my CTR a complete disaster, and I do not know if Google uses that as a measure of smart pricing, but I'd rather not give them a chance to think about it.
